Score every frame, strike and spare
This bowling score calculator keeps a ten-pin scoresheet for up to six players. Tap the keypad or type the balls in standard notation (X for a strike, / for a spare, - for a miss) and the frame-by-frame score updates instantly, including strikes and spares that are still waiting for their bonus balls and the three-ball 10th frame.
It follows the scoring in the USBC rules, so it also works as a checker for the machine at your local lanes. For tables and knockout formats, see the league table calculator and the tournament bracket generator.
How to use the Bowling Score Calculator
- Choose the number of players and type their names. Add a handicap if your league uses one.
- Press the keypad for the next ball. The tool tells you whose ball it is and disables impossible keys (for example X after a first ball).
- Or paste a full game into a player's box, for example
X 7/ 9- X 81 9/ X X 6/ 71. - Read each frame's running score, the final score, strikes, spares and the best score still possible. Use Undo ball for a mistake and New game to start again.
Bowling Score Calculator features
Real scoring rules
Strikes count the next two balls and spares the next one; a pending bonus leaves the running score blank until the balls are known.
10th frame done right
A strike or spare earns bonus balls that only fill the 10th frame, so X X X in the 10th gives 30 and X 5 / gives 20.
Multiple players
Up to six players take turns frame by frame; the winner is shown when everyone has finished.
Keypad or notation
Enter balls with big buttons on a phone, or type and paste notation on a computer.
Best still possible
Shows the highest score you can still reach, assuming strikes from here, which is 300 at the start.
How ten-pin scoring works
A game has ten frames. In frames one to nine you get up to two balls to knock down ten pins. An open frame scores the pins you hit. A spare (all ten in two balls) scores 10 plus the pins from your next ball. A strike (all ten with the first ball) scores 10 plus your next two balls. In the 10th frame a strike gives two extra balls and a spare gives one extra ball; the extra balls only count in that frame.
A perfect game is twelve strikes in a row and scores 300. The lowest-effort high score people quote is a spare in every frame: ten spares of 9 and 1 with a final bonus of 9 score 190. Nine pins and a miss in every frame score 90.
| Game | Balls | Score |
|---|---|---|
| Perfect game | X ×12 | 300 |
| Nine-spares game | 9/ ×10 then 9 | 190 |
| Five-spares game | 5/ ×10 then 5 | 150 |
| Nine and a miss | 9- ×10 | 90 |
| Gutter game | - ×20 | 0 |
Reading the notation
Use X for a strike, / for a spare, - or 0 for a miss, F for a foul (which scores zero) and a digit for pins. The tool also accepts two digits that add to ten, such as 9 1, and treats them as a spare. It rejects impossible entries, such as 9 and 9 in one frame, with the frame number in the message.
The scoring rules were checked on 24 October 2026 against the USBC "How to Score a Game" guide and the USBC Playing Rules (July 2024). League handicaps differ by league, so the handicap box is a plain number of pins added to the final score. Local house rules, such as which foul is called, are not modelled.
Bowling Score Calculator FAQ
How do you calculate a bowling score?
Add the pins in each frame, plus bonuses: a spare adds your next ball, a strike adds your next two balls. The running total is carried from frame to frame.
What is a perfect bowling score?
300, which needs twelve strikes in a row: one in each of the first nine frames and three in the 10th.
How is the 10th frame scored?
You bowl two balls, plus a third if you strike or spare. The pins from all balls are simply added; they are not used as bonuses for any later frame.
What does a score of 190 from nine-pin spares mean?
Ten frames of 9 and a spare each score 19 (10 plus the next ball, a 9), so 190 with a 9 on the bonus ball.
How do I enter a miss or a gutter ball?
Use the 0 key (shown as -) or type - or 0. A foul is F and also scores 0.
Does this work for handicap leagues?
Yes. Enter each bowler's handicap in pins and the tool adds it to the final score and picks the winner on the handicapped total.
